Description

The 6-day Marangu Route is the most established and comfortable route on Mount Kilimanjaro and the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping. It follows the same trail for ascent and descent, making it popular with climbers who prefer sleeping in mountain huts.

This route is ideal for trekkers seeking a shorter itinerary with added acclimatization, as the extra day allows the body more time to adjust to altitude before the summit attempt. The trail passes through diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and arctic summit zone.

The Marangu Route approaches the summit from the southeast, ascending via Kibo Hut and descending back through the same route to Marangu Gate.

Highlights
  • Overnight at Kibo Hut before the summit push
  • Better protection from weather compared to camping routes
  • Shorter itinerary but still a true Kilimanjaro experience
  • Gentle and gradual trail, perfect for first-time climbers

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration. The hike begins through dense rainforest with rich vegetation and chances to spot colobus monkeys. The trail is gentle and scenic, making it a great introduction to the mountain. You’ll reach Mandara Hut in the afternoon, rest, and enjoy dinner. Overnight at Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail opens into moorland with wide views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes more rugged as altitude increases. The walk is steady and rewarding, allowing your body to adjust gradually. Arrive at Horombo Hut for relaxation, meals, and overnight stay.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This day is dedicated to acclimatization to improve your chances of reaching the summit. You’ll take a short hike towards Zebra Rocks and then return to Horombo Hut. The rest of the day is for relaxing, hydration, and mental preparation for higher altitude. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

Today you trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is dry and alpine desert, with minimal vegetation. After reaching Kibo Hut, you’ll rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Overnight at Kibo Hut.

Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

You’ll start the summit climb around midnight, trekking slowly to Gilman’s Point and continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After enjoying the achievement and sunrise views, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Days 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you begin the final descent through moorland and lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. This is a relaxed walk, giving you time to reflect on your incredible Kilimanjaro journey. At the gate, you’ll sign out, receive your summit certificates, and celebrate your achievement with our team. You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
